How do I choose a real estate agent in Melbourne?
Short answer
Ask every agent for the same five things in writing: the comparable sales behind their price, their fee in dollars, marketing itemised at cost, how many other campaigns they are running, and how and when they will report to you. Then check their recent local sales and reviews.
Why it matters
Trust in agents is low: they ranked last of ten professions in the 2025 Ethics Index. Asking for everything in writing is the simplest protection.
Red flags
A price well above everyone else’s with no evidence, marketing you must pay upfront whether or not you sell, vague answers about rebates, and an agent who is too busy to return calls.
